Sarah Sockbeson is one of the top Wabanaki weavers working today. Her tight weaves are impeccable, and her sense of color is outstanding. Sockbeson often uses finials made from deer antler; this case is an exception, though. The dark finial is made from buffalo horn.
This basket demonstrates Sockbeson's mastery of weaving miniature form with extremely fine ash splints. The distinguishing factor of this basket is the riot of color, including yellow, shades of blue, orange, purple, pink, and green. All these colors woven into a basket with fine splints create an extremely pleasing aesthetic.
Sweetgrass forms a rim at the top of the basket, both on the body and on the cover.
