Caleb Hoffman is a son of Theresa Secord, founding director of the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance. While he originally learned how to make baskets from his mother, he has most recently apprenticed with renowned Passamaquoddy basket maker Jeremy Frey.
Caleb has absorbed the teachings of Mr. Frey, but he is developing an entirely new design aesthetic. This basket is an example: the bottom part of the basket seemingly acts as a base for the very fine weave acorn basket.
In addition to innovation in the form and design, Mr. Hoffman used a brown dye that is as rich looking as cocoa; it's a very pleasing basket overall.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary lists one of the meanings of the word compound as "composed of or resulting from union of separate elements, ingredients, or parts". This basket is a wonderful example of that.
Materials: black ash, sweetgrass, dyes.
2 3/4 inches diameter (at its widest) x 5 1/2 inches high, including acorn stem.
