Gabriel Frey has pivoted to making etched birch bark baskets over the past few years. His etching and his binding are exquisite.
This basket provides an interesting contrast between light winter bark on one side and dark winter bark on the other.
Gabriel Frey is a 7th generation basket maker. As a child, he observed his grandfather making utilitarian baskets. While other members of his family, such as Gal Frey and Jeremy Frey, make fancy baskets, Gabriel has made utilitarian baskets his specialty. He has brought the design of utilitarian baskets into the 21st century with the addition of leather covers, points, and other innovations.
Frey was recently awarded a commission: a 6-foot-tall Wabanaki spear fisherman holding a traditional fishing spear named Amewin; it will be placed in the First Light Commons, a new waterfront park in Portland, Maine.
