This is a statement basket by Passamaquoddy weaver Gal Frey. At almost 11 inches tall, it has great presence and will get anyone's attention. Woven from black ash wood and sweetgrass, the points are the first thing one sees. On closer look, the small curls on the cover are quite interesting. The strands of woven sweetgrass provide great contrast with both the natural ash color and the rich blue splints.
Ms. Frey learned the art of fancy basket weaving from Sylvia Gabriel in the early 2000s. She later taught her son Jeremy to weave. Her son Gabriel is also a very accomplished basket maker.
