This mask, carved from beautifully hued Brazilian soapstone by David Ruben Piktouqun in 20003, has three feathers crowning the head. Nesik represents wind and breath, and Sila represents the atmosphere, so we have a sculpture that pays tribute to those aspects of Mother Earth. The feathers, representing flight, fit the theme comfortably. The face embedded within the right eye is the spirit of the larger being.
Born in the Northwest Territories of Canada, David Ruben Piktouqun was sent away to a residential school at a young age. As such, he is comfortable in the Indigenous world as well as mainstream Canadian society.
Face is 15 1/2 inches high x 7 1/4 inches at its widest point x 2 1/2 deep. From the bottom of the base to the top of the feathers, it is 31 inches high.
The feathers are removable for shipping.
