This sculpture of a shaman was carved from richly colored Brazilian soapstone. The shaman appears to be anticipating someone or something, hands behind his back and knees slightly bent.
The head, surrounded by artificial fur, is a separate piece and can be turned or removed.
Born in the Northwest Territories of Canada, David Ruben Piktouqun was sent away to a residential school at a young age. As such, he is comfortable in the Indigenous world as well as mainstream Canadian society.
