Aron Griffith, Maliseet artist, creates birch bark baskets and mother earth effigies from birch bark, adorned with animals, plants, and traditional Wabanaki designs. The birch tree has long provided Northeast Woodland Indians with material for containers as well as canoes.
The fiddlehead ferns adorning this basket are in the process of unfurling in the spring. This is the stage at which the ferns are collected as food. They have been a staple of Eastern Woodland Indians for many generations.
