Maliseet Artist Aron Griffith Birch Bark Heart Basket
Aron Griffith, Maliseet artist, creates birch bark baskets and mother earth effigies from birch bark, adorned with animals, plants, and traditional Wabanaki designs. The birch tree has long provided Northeast Woodland Indians with material for containers as well as canoes.
This basket is one of a kind. The small heart in the center of the cover is a knot from a birch tree. The heart shape of the knot inspired the artist to create a basket around it. Etched on the sides of the baskets are vines terminating in heart-shaped leaves. Two sweetgrass braids surround the small centerpiece heart.
