Peter Smith Vintage Wood Carving
Peter Smith (1912 - 1995), Cup'ik, was a renowned mask maker and wood carver from Mekoryuk on Nunivak Island, Alaska. He passed his mask designs on to his daughter, Lola Ferguson, who has continued the tradition into the 21st century.
This carving of a halibut and a walrus is ca. 3rd quarter of the 20th century. It is likely made from driftwood with a nice patina. Etched ink designs, mostly black with a small touch of red, complete the composition. The walrus' tusks have been recently replaced. The carving is signed on the bottom.
