Sarah Sockbeson is one of the top Wabanki weavers today. Her tight weaves are impeccable, and her sense of color is outstanding. Sockbeson often uses finials made from deer antler, as is true on this fine basket.
The precise points of the basket are combined with curls. The natural color of the points contrasts beautifully with the gold and dark purple splints. The purple splints appear, under most lighting conditions, as black.
The urchin shape in Wabanaki baskets is reminiscent of the sea urchins along the Maine coast, some of which are purple in color.
