Sarah Sockbeson is one of the top Wabanki weavers today. Her tight weaves are impeccable, and her sense of color is outstanding. Sockbeson often uses finials made from deer antler, as is true on this fine basket.
This fancy basket, with its precise curls, has natural colored curls, which contrast beautifully with the green and blue splints.
The urchin shape in Wabanaki baskets is reminiscent of the sea urchins along the Maine coast, some of which are purple in color. Sweetgrass adorns the top of the basket, both on the body and on the cover.
