A blazingly bright purse basket woven from black ash by Gabriel Frey, a highly accomplished and innovative Passamaquoddy basket maker. The shape is inspired by that of pack baskets used for hundreds of years by the Wabanaki tribes of Maine and Canada. The pack baskets were designed to fit inside the hull of a canoe.
Gabriel Frey is a 7th generation basket maker. As a child, he observed his grandfather making utilitarian baskets. While other members of his family, such as Gal Frey and Jeremy Frey, make fancy baskets, Gabriel has made utilitarian baskets his specialty. He has brought the design of utilitarian baskets into the 21st century with the addition of leather covers, points, and other innovations.
The purse is lined with leather and has adjustable straps. It is designed to be used, and is rugged despite its delicate look.
